A Timeless Tradition of Excellence
Crews Family Farms is a culmination of 4 generations of cattle farmers with a long history of working with the Angus breed. Harry A. Crews started out in Buckingham County, VA with an Angus herd in 1929 establishing Stoney Point Farm. He later transitioned over to registered polled Hereford cattle before his son James D. Crews Sr. (Dabney) took over both the Hereford cattle herd and Stoney Point Farm in the 1980’s. At that time, black baldy feeder calves were in high demand and Dabney started crossing the herd with Angus bulls and eventually ended up with an entire black Angus commercial cow-calf operation. Dabney was one of the early members of the Buckingham Cattleman’s Association and sold feeder calves through the group over the years.
In 2013 James D. Crews Jr. (Jim) purchased 6 bred registered black Angus heifers from Mount Rush Farm in collaboration with his son James D. Crews, III (J.D.) who was majoring in Animal Science at Virginia Tech at the time. After graduation in 2018, J.D. returned to Buckingham to manage Crews Family Farms on a full-time basis. It has become a true family farm effort as each member of the Crews family plays a key role. J.D. heads up the daily farm operations and management of a current herd of approximately 250 registered females. J.D. is a member of the Alpha Gamma Rho fraternity, Beta Eta chapter at Virginia Tech. He serves on the board of the Buckingham FSA, the board of the Buckingham Farm Bureau and also serves on the Buckingham County Planning Commission representing the Maysville District. He is on the Membership Services Committee of the Virginia Cattlemen’s Association. He is supported by his wife Bailey Crews, who also has a degree in Animal Science from Virginia Tech and grew up as part of a commercial cow calf operation. Together, they are responsible for the health and nutritional needs of the cattle, breeding selection and management as well as all record-keeping. In addition to his full-time real estate land and timber business, Jim assists on a regular basis with forage production, animal health, AI breeding and the financial management of the operation. Jim’s wife Jill, who works full-time as Senior Vice President of Marketing for a Richmond real estate development firm, oversees the sales and marketing efforts for Crews Family Farms.
Crews Family Farms is an active member of the American Angus Association, Virginia Angus Association, Virginia Cattlemen’s Association, Buckingham Cattlemen’s Association and the Central Virginia Cattlemen’s Association.
We will continue to focus on advancing the genetics of the Angus breed with a significant emphasis on phenotype, structural soundness, performance, maternal value, carcass merit and well balanced EPD’s. Our goal is to produce superior Angus seedstock that will be productive, profitable and sustainable for both purebred and commercial cow-calf producers.
