Crews Family Farms bulls are developed on rangeland fescue-based pastures and supplemented with Purina Accuration and Purina high magnesium minerals, equipping them to work and thrive on regional forages. Every bull is individually selected based on phenotype, structural soundness, feed efficiency and weight gain performance, balanced EPDs, genomic profiles and carcass merit. We also perform ANGUS GS genomic testing on all our bulls and replacement heifers to confirm DNA parentage and to provide our customers with more accurate EPDs. Finally, every bull has passed a breeding soundness exam and semen evaluation by a licensed veterinarian prior to sale.

Crews Family Farms culls approximately 50% of its crop of bull calves each year and markets them as steers in the Buckingham Cattlemen’s Association Annual Virginia Quality Assured Feeder Calf Sale during the first week of August each year. Most of our steers are sired by our natural herd bulls and all our steers have graded M-1 and M-2 and have obtained premiums above market prices. We market our steers in the Buckingham Cattlemen’s Association Feeder Calf Sale because we want to be able to demonstrate to our commercial bull customers and other commercial cow-calf producers that our bulls will produce consistent high quality feeder calves that will grade well and receive above market premiums.

Crews Family Farms produces a large percentage of bulls that qualify as Certified Angus Beef (“CAB”), based on breed average or better for two key metrics, Marbling EPD and Angus Grid Value Index ($G). It takes more than a black hide to earn the (“CAB”) logo and the premiums that come along with it. The Angus breed is performing extremely well in the beef industry with strong demand from consumers for high quality Angus beef. According to the American Angus Association, more Angus influenced cattle are qualifying for the (“CAB”) brand than ever before and it’s clear that the Angus bull has become America’s bull. He sires calving ease, growth and superior marbling and works well in any environment, and on any cow. They also report that Angus steers and heifers bring an average of almost $25 more per head than their non-Angus contemporaries.
